Decorative Lamps and Lighting Choices For Your Home

Using lamps and lighting sources strategically throughout your home can add both practical and decorative touches to each room. General or broad lighting should be used in each room, to provide an overall or background light source, and designer lights should be used to create the new look, feel, and style of the true. A common type of broad lighting is mounted in the ceiling.

Ceiling lights can also be hanging down, such as in the form of chandeliers. Ceiling pendant lights usually come with a variety of shade styles and designs. These shades might be made of glass, fabric, or paper. Ceiling lights can be decorative and functional all it once. For more even clear lighting, consider installing recessed or semi recessed lights which are spaced evenly across the ceiling, or along the top of the wall. Recessed and semi recessed lighting is also excellent to highlight accent pieces in a room, such as the piece of wall art or a statue.

Evenly spaced recessed lighting is also both functional and attractive when used in the kitchen. Task lighting is normally used to give the focus directional lights to a small area. Desk lamps are an excellent example of task lighting, since it can be adjusted in various directions to put more light exactly where it's needed. Reading lamps are another example of task lighting, since they're often used to shine light on a book without shining it on your eyes or lighting the rest of the room.

Desk lamps, table lamps, and floor lamps are all popular types of lighting to use as task based lighting. These are favorites to use and selling areas, writing areas, and reading areas too. Accent lights are normally used to feature something special in the home such as live plants, photos and art work, or special collectibles. Accent lights are also sometimes used to show off architectural features in the home. Accent lights alone can make dramatic differences in a room's design style.

Shining a narrow beam of light at a flower vase for instance, can leave the lower part of the vase in the shadows which creates the dramatic floating effect. Lighting a picture from above or below creates a decorative and elegant spotlight on the photo, and this is a very popular lighting design technique too. As you can see, there are many ways to use lamps and lighting to decorate your home inside and out.

Get started in your own home today by rearranging existing lamps and lights you have, or buying something new to work into your new decorating theme.
